  • Keep your bike well maintained and change the tires when excessively worn to avoid mechanical problems on the road as much as possible
  • Be prepared for mechanical problems; make sure you know how to change a tire and bring the proper tools and spare parts
  • Check the weather forecast and be aware of changing weather conditions; bring appropriate gear
  • Always wear a helmet (those under 18 years are required to wear a helmet under LA County Code) when riding and properly fasten the chin strap
  • Regardless of age, helmets are required for participation in any Triatomics Multisport Club activity
  • Wear bright clothing, which will help drivers see you
  • At night, make sure you have reflective gear and a light
  • Arrive early
  • Agree to the route before leaving for the ride and do not deviate from that route
  • See a new member? Say hello and make sure they are introduced
  • Establish a cycling buddy with a matching ability level and watch out for one another during the ride
  • Start the ride on time
  • Do not wear headphones
  • Pass other cyclists only on the left
  • Announce your pass to other cyclists ("passing on your left")
  • Be predictable to drivers; signal your turns and stops
  • Take some money for rest stops or in case of the need to make an emergency phone call
  • Have ID and an emergency contact phone number(s) and name(s) on you
  • If you have one, take a cell phone for making emergency calls (don't talk on the phone while cycling!)
  • Be aware of traffic
  • Help contribute to the well-being of all cyclists by observing and reporting to the police the license plate number of any drivers that harass or endanger cyclists (they have violated Los Alamos County Code Section 38-545-f)
  • Obey all traffic laws and follow the Los Alamos County Code that apply to bicycle riding
  • Do NOT pass vehicles closely on the right when they are stopped at a light (this violates Los Alamos County Code Section 38-545-e)
  • Ride as far right as practicable
  • Make riding single file a habit and never ride more than two abreast; only ride two abreast when on a sufficiently shouldered road
  • Include new members even if that means slowing the pace
  • Make sure everyone completes the ride safely
  • Remember to hydrate and eat appropriately
  • Have fun!
